Introductions to MPAC and For-Profit Theater

Welcome to the new blog for the Maplewood Performing Arts Centre!  Here we plan to keep you abreast of various news items we run across that is relevant to MPAC and our followers.

With that our first blog has to do with being aware of various business structures for theaters today.  Doing a search of legal structures for theaters the main structure that I have found used in theater organizations is the 501c3 or not-for-profit.  There are a few for-profits theaters that I have found that are still in existence outside of the commercial ventures in NYC, one of which is PianoFight.  There were others that I was watching, but alas I believe they have folded, i.e. Capitol Hill Arts Center and Off-Market Theater.

There is a new model emerging also,  the L3C , a kind of hybrid between the LLC and 501c3; a low profit alternative if you will.   It's so new I'm not aware of any arts organizations that have made it work in the long run. If there are some viable organizations out there taking on the L3C challenge it would be good to see a variety in the theater business landscape.

If you know of a L3c theater or even a for-profit theater, leave a comment and a link to their site.
